High-Impact Instructional Strategies

John Hattie is a leading researcher in the area of instructional strategies and their impact on student achievement.  In his initial study, “Visible Learning,” Hattie ranked 138 influences that are related to learning outcomes.  In follow-up studies, he has now compiled 195 effects and rank ordered them.  Any of the instructional strategies that have more than a 0.4 effect size are said to be high-impact.  Here is a link to some of his research.  The chart below lists examples of strategies you may be familiar with and their effect sizes.  Click here for the complete chart of influences on student achievement and their effect size.
