The purpose of the Special Olympic Program is to provide special education athletes an opportunity to participate in the sports program. The Special Olympics is designed to reach those individuals who may not be able to successfully participate in team sports and intramurals.
The Summer Olympics, which is one of two events we will be participating, offers many different events to fit individual needs and various ability levels of the athletes. Some of the events include: shot put, long jump, walks, distance running, and wheelchair events.
Each Olympian is allowed to participate in three events per meet. They train prior to each event and attend a trial meet to determined grouping for the Olympic meet. Each student involved will train for his or her events after school for two days a week. Practices will take place at Central Middle School.
There is one training session coming up called the Area Meet, and it is held before the actual Olympics. Each student will have to participate in this training day to determine appropriate placement. The event dates are:
- Area Track/ Field Meet – Wednesday, May 2, 2018 – William Cohen Field, Bangor
- Summer Olympics – Parade Friday, June 8; Events on Saturday, June 9 – UMaine
RSU #64 will pay the registration fee and provide transportation to and from the Area Event on May 3 which is held at the William Cohen School in Bangor. If parents would like to make other arrangements for their child, please let the coach know. RSU #64 will pay the registration fee for the State Meet, but ask parents to transport and stay to support their athletes for the Parade on the June 8 and events on June 9, which take place at the University of Maine at Orono.
Parents will be required to provide documentation of a recent physical within the last three years and clothing needed for practice: sneakers, shorts or sweatpants, and t-shirt.
This program provides a valuable experience for our students. They will be able to compete against others at their ability level, built self-confidence, and experience success!
Practices will be held at Central Middle School. Please bring sneakers, shorts or sweatpants, and a t-shirt. All practices will be from 3:00 – 4:15. An activity bus is available. (High school students can walk to CMS with Mrs. Ward and Mrs. Shorey)
